Frequently Asked Questions

Flat Caps

How do I measure my head?

Using a soft tape measure to measure around your head. Start at the front, align tape measure 2cm above your eyebrows, stay above your ears and around the largest point at the back of your head. Record the measurement in centimetres keeping the tape measure close to your head.

(if you do not have a soft tape measure, take the circumference with a length of string and record the measurement of that).

Do you make regimental style flat caps for all the regements/services?

In most cases yes, if we can source a cap badge for the regiment you would like, it can be added to your flat cap. This is applicable for all current or recent Armed Forces cap badges, however if you would like a rare or historic badge please contact us directly so see if this is possible.

Do you make other flat caps besides military themed ones?

Yes we have made a range of caps using Scottish tartan, English Wool and Harris Tweed to name a few. We can help you create a bespoke flat cap in carefully selected fabric, lining and interfacing to suit your personal taste and needs.

Bespoke & Made To Measure

What is the difference between Bespoke and Made to Measure?

Made to measure is a garment made from one of our existing patterns which is modified and shaped to fit your measurements. It will be mostly constructed with machine and hand stitching.

Bespoke garments are made with a pattern that will be drafted from scratch allowing it to be perfectly sculpted to your form. The majority of the garment will be hand stitched inside and out with lapels and chest canvas pad stitched by hand, along with all the usual bespoke garment techniques.

Both Made to Measure and Bespoke have traditional floating canvas and hand stitched button holes.

How many fitting will I need?

Usually we will require at least 2 in person fittings for made to measure and 3  for bespoke to properly tailor a garment to your body. You may require more fittings but it is worth it to get the fit perfect.

what fabrics can I choose?

We specialise in using British woven fabrics, including tweed, English wool and tartan. The Tailor's Shop will expertly guide you through your selection and help advise you on the best fabric weights and types for the look you are trying to achieve. We will source samples of fabric you interested in so you may see them in person before commiting.
